OVERVIEW
Glass ionomer cement (GIC) is a self-adhesive restorative material. Chemically, it is a combination of fluoro-aluminosilicate glass powder and polyacrylic acid liquid. It is a versatile material and has a broad spectrum of uses in restorative and pediatric dentistry.
Auto cure GIC is preferable as a restorative material to Light cured GIC, or resin modified glass ionomer cement (RMGIC). RMGICs have poor wear resistance on occlusal surfaces and in larger restorations the curing light does not penetrate to the base of the restoration (due to the high opacity).
Preparation and Restoration of the Tooth
Cleaning: A pumice slurry should be applied to the tooth surface using a prophy cup. Placement of restoration: the mixed GIC is carried to the cavity with the help of a cement carrier and adapted using a condenser.
